Read Bio

TJ Steyn is an investor and philanthropist, and the co-founder of Steyn Group.

TJ was born in Johannesburg, the economic engine of Africa, where South Africa’s vibrant diversity and economic challenges are showcased in equal measure. Growing up in this environment shaped his outlook and desire to focus on long-term investments that deliver returns, both social and financial.

After studying accountancy at the University of the Free State, TJ qualified as a wildlife ranger and managed Shambala, a game reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo province. TJ later led the research and development of a funeral insurance product for Telesure, and set up Steyn Entertainment which runs Daisies, South Africa’s largest music festival.

Steyn Group’s first company, Almero Holdings, was launched in 2013 and is at the vanguard of co-living projects in the UK. TJ and his brother, Louis, have since grown the Group’s real estate, private equity and venture capital investment strategies in the UK and the US through Pennyworth Capital, Six Peak, Westerly Group and Tune House. Their diverse portfolio includes investments in property, health care, fitness, education technology and clean energy.

TJ remains close to his roots in South Africa where he and Louis launched EMS Foundation in 2014. The charity focusses on wildlife conservation and poverty relief. In Johannesburg, TJ and Louis are involved in the regeneration of the inner-city Maboneng Precinct, as well as the running of various family businesses in the hospitality and entertainment sectors.
